Chapter 17: Back to Lavington Engineering

Dan steered the old Packard into the employee parking lot and swung it into an available space. I don’t get why everyone is down on my truck when they’re tooling around in ancient Cadillacs and old grungy Packards, he muttered to himself.

It was one o’clock in the afternoon when he walked into the office. Hank waved at him. “We’re going to have the production meeting in a half an hour, right here,” he said.

“Good,” Dan replied. “By the way, Gordon won’t be coming back this afternoon, but he told me we could have the meeting in his office.”

Dan went into Gordon’s office and closed the door. He dialed Norma’s number wondering if she was at home or working somewhere. Happily, Norma answered the phone.

“Norma, it’s me, Dan,” he said quietly.

“Dan! I didn’t hear from you at all yesterday. I tried to call you at the Lavingtons, but got Gordon instead. He only wanted to know who I was. I never even got to ask for you. What’s going on?” Norma asked a little tentatively.

“Yeah, I know you talked to Gordon,” Dan responded. “He wanted to know if I had talked to your dad. How could I? I had just met you. But, I got the feeling that your father is not one of his favorite people. Outside of that, Wolfman’s enjoying his first day at Lavington Engineering.”

“”You’re working? That’s got to be a good sign. Can you handle it? How is your face?” Norma replied.

“Swollen, battered, black and blue,” Dan replied. “However, it’s getting better and as long as I don’t look in the mirror I barely notice it. I’m in plain view at Lavington Engineering and most people don’t faint when they see me.”

“What are you doing at Lavington Engineering? Is this a permanent thing?”

“Well, Gordon continues his act of head jailer, but I think I might have a real opportunity here depending on what position I can talk my way into. But, so far I’m strictly the new guy. The interesting thing is that Gordon actually likes having me here in spite of everything, and this place may prove to be an ice breaker. Gordon definitely needs some help in dealing with the people here.”

“Dan, I’m so glad you’re okay,” Norma said. “Good for you that you’re fighting back and seem to be making some headway. But, when I didn’t hear from you I got really despondent. Maybe this whole thing was just a put-up job and I was making a big mistake to get involved. You know I can get a little pushy sometimes, and maybe you don’t really need my two bits right now?”

“Oh Norma I don’t mind your two bits at all,” he replied earnestly. “Yes, I look forward to, I mean, I am really looking forward to seeing you! And your Dad too, of course.” Dan stopped and gathered his wits. “Actually I’m totally bushed right now, but I should be a little better later in the week. Maybe we could actually have that meeting with your father.
